Stage 2: Leavin' Louisiana in the Broad Daylight

Just an ordinary story 'bout the way things go
'Round and around nobody knows but the highway
Goes on forever
That ol' highway rolls on forever.
"Leaving Louisiana" - The Oakridge Boys

We ran down the Interstate from Nederland just to get clear of civilization.  The idea was we'd get some miles under our belts, and then pull off onto the more fun, less populated areas.

We exited at the Atchafalaya River Highway, and consulted our electronic guides

Checking the GPS

Yeah, it says it's a road!

Well, it started as a road...

...but then turned to gravel for about 4 or 5 miles.  This of course brought much pleasure to my riding companion, with his DL650 Adventure Bike, dual sport tires, and offroad capable suspension.  My sport touring bike, with sticky touring tires was a bit less pleased with this discovery, but we pressed forward.  There were a few bad sports, but overall, the big heavy ST13 took it fairly well.

The second objective of the trip began in earnest - moving turtles out of the road
Now that we were off the super slab and out of the gravel, we followed the Atchafalaya River Highway all the way up until we found the Mississippi river and Route 15.
